We woke up in Sydney on the Fifth of July. The night before had been fireworks in the rain. Montanans are not weak. We headed to the river past the brown public access signs. It was a drought year. The water was low. The Yellowstone River →

The agate was everywhere. We were looking for clear dendritic — the kind that looks like little trees frozen inside the stone. What we kept finding was red. I made a pile on a little island out in the middle of the water and thought — agate is everywhere, I’m not wading back out there. Then I picked this one up off the bar. There’s a lighter streak cutting across the face. I don’t know what made it. I cut it oval to keep the streak centered. It polished out clean. The ribbon stayed. The Yellowstone River Collection →
